In our fast-paced, much-traveled society, the spread of germs (i.e., disease-producing microorganisms) is rampant and periodically reaches epidemic proportions. Cruise ships have been forced to turn around and hospitalize their infected passengers, hotels & schools have temporarily closed until completely sanitized and many restaurants & catering operations have never fully recovered from the bacteria, virus or fungi “visited” on their facilities and unknowingly transmitted to and by employees and customers alike.

Health Departments have responded with a series of detailed “Prevention Guidelines” that cover a broad range of general recommendations for hotels, restaurants and public buildings, and an array of basic clean-up/sanitization protocols that include cleaning & surveillance procedures as well as the treatment and handling of contaminated materials (including emesis and feces removal). With such guidelines and the hundreds – if not thousands – of EPA- registered or FDA-approved sanitizers, disinfectants and sterilants available, why the ongoing spread of Escherichia Coli (E-coli), Staphylococcus Aureus, multiple forms of Salmonella, Herpes Simplex, Norovirus and many other germs involved in hand-to-hand, hand-to-surface and surface-to-hand & body contact on a daily basis?

The Failure of Traditional Antimicrobials and Ordinary Cleaners

Traditional antimicrobials have well-established efficacy against common bacteria, virus and fungi. Likewise, ordinary soaps, solvents and detergents will effectively “clean” surfaces of everyday soil. It remains, however, that both traditional antimicrobials and ordinary cleaners are only “one-time kill” or “one-time clean” compositions that (a) provide no long-term protection against contamination, re-contamination and re-soiling and (b) are frequently so incompatible with each other that the products used for daily cleaning also remove whatever antimicrobial benefits that may have remained on a surface.

Hospitals, clinics and nursing homes are prime examples of the failure of “one-time” antimicrobials and “one-time” cleaners. As a class, these institutions are totally committed to germ-free environments, and typically purchase more sanitizers, disinfectants and sterilants than any other group. Yet the existence and spread of germs in their facilities continue more or less unabated.

For the most part, hospital operating wings (and the instruments, equipment and the clothing of operating room personnel used therein) are continuously sterilized. Elsewhere, however, although the facility’s “housekeeping” unit regularly cleans patient rooms and common areas, they generally do so using un-sterilized housekeeping carts, mops, cleaning cloths, uniforms, etc. Also, on patient floors, un-sterilized television & telephone controls, computer keyboards and a range of other equipment (such as blood pressure monitors, blood service carriers, furniture and food service carts & trays) are frequently transferred from room to room and from public areas to rooms without restriction; enabling the rapid transfer of germs from one room and one patient or visitor to another.

SANI-SHIELD® is a ready-to-use, dual-action “spray & wipe” product. It easily sanitizes everyday spills, splatters and surface-contact microorganisms and simultaneously imparts an invisible, multifunctional barrier coating on which (a) germs will not attach and grow and (b) and which dramatically reduces the formation, adhesion and buildup of insoluble soap scum, hard water film, minerals and foodstuff.

And for those unprotected surfaces on which insoluble soap scum, lime scale, mineral deposits and foodstuff is already present, there is the all new, patent-pending SANI-SCRUB® that safely and effectively removes such buildup…and also simultaneously leaves an invisible, multifunctional barrier coating to protect surfaces against the attachment and growth of everyday germs and the formation, adhesion and buildup of everyday soil. The study reported on 7/14/00 confirmed the improved efficacy (“kill rate”) against Escherichia coli of Sani-Shield (Formula A) compared to untreated glass (control) and silicone-treated glass. The study reported on 8/21/2000 confirmed the further improved efficacy against E-coli of Sani-Shield (Formula B) compared to untreated glass and silicone-treated glass. The study reported on 9/18/2000 confirmed the still further improved efficacy against E-coli of Sani-Shield (Formula C) compared to untreated glass and silicone treated glass. The study reported on 6/26/03 confirmed the significant efficacy of Sani-Shield (Formula D) to remove (“spray & wipe”) Escherichia coli, Staphylococus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium from contaminated ceramic tile and plastic laminate surfaces. The study reported on 11/14/03 confirmed the dramatically improved efficacy of Sani-Shield (Formula D) to both clean glass, ceramic tile and plastic laminate surfaces of Bacillus subtilis, E-coli, Staphylococus and Salmonella and shield the cleaned surfaces against recontamination at 12-hour intervals for a period up to 72 hours without significant loss of “shielding” efficacy. The study reported on 2/16/05 confirmed the rather amazing efficacy of Sani-Shield (Formula E) to simultaneously clean, shield and sanitize glass, unglazed (surface-porous) ceramic tile and plastic laminates against E-coli and Salmonella choleraesuis, including the surprising laboratory notation that Sani-Shield’s “shielding” efficacy was so complete that Colony Forming Units (CFUs) were difficult to spread on the surface before losing viability. Tests are currently underway to assess the clean, shield and sanitizing efficacy of Sani-Shield (Formula E) on glass, glazed ceramic tiles, plastic laminates and stainless steel against Salmonella choleraesuis, Escherichia coli, Aureobasidium pullalans (bathroom mold), Herpes I and Feline Calicivirus as the surrogate for Norovirus.

By the very nature of everyday soil and microbial contamination, there can be no such thing as “permanent” soil and germ-free surfaces. Effective surface care must be ongoing! Even DuPont’s world-famous Teflon® coatings do not prevent soiling, they just make cookware, tools and equipments infinitely easier to clean. Multi-Surface “Sanitizers”
